Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder and suffered anxiety linked to associations with words. Ford began performing in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in 1996.
